Crystal & Gemstone
Fordite was originally named after a paint buildup in the Ford car plant was cut to form cabochons.
The layers of paint had become so hard over the years it could be cut into cabochons and worked so that the layers built up over the years could be exposed.
No two will ever be identical, these cabochons are from paint works at a Tuk Tuk factory in India.
Each has a 60’s psychedelic feel some almost reminiscent of lava lamps.
It is also known as Detroit Agate or Motor Agate.
This is not a gemstone, it is in fact layers of paint. It is the remains of old car paint from car manufacturing plants on in the case of this one a Tuk Tuk factory in India.
ver time, the overspray of paint build up and it eventually is cut and removed.
Some clever lapidary experts came up with the idea of using this material to create unusual and slightly psychedelic cabochons.
Each piece is unique and will have a unique colouration and pattern. Due to the way vehicles are painted this material is getting harder to source.
